The Monarch Project: a service for non-status and precarious status survivors

In partnership with the Refugee Centre, the Monarch Project is offered to non-status and precarious women as well as trans, Two-Spirit and non-binary people who are survivors of sexual assault.

Our program provides psychosocial support and socio-judicial assistance, as accompaniment through the legal immigration proceedings and as support in overcoming the consequences of sexual assault, as well as all issues at the intersection of these two experiences. We offer the Monarch Project services in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon), Kirundi and Kinyarwanda. We are currently working on setting up interpretation services.

Our workers are trained to offer psychosocial follow-up adapted to the reality of people without status or with precarious status, to assist in the drafting of documents related to immigration processes, as well as to accompany during various judicial sessions. We also offer the possibility of obtaining interpreters’ services and will be supported by the expertise of the Refugee Center. Due to the precariousness of the presence on the territory, Monarch Project’s users have access to a separate waiting list from the rest of the Center and can therefore access services more quickly.

In particular, legal proceedings of immigration involving the testimony of experiences of sexual assault(s), such as asylum applications based on gender-based violence, can be particularly exhausting and retraumatizing. We therefore believe that it is essential that support be available to ensure safety and well-being throughout the process, regardless of the outcome. We hope that the Monarch Project can contribute to answer the rising demand in the territory and to the well-being of non-status or precarious status people, who are too often forgotten in the service offer.
